With Africa at one of the most pivotal times in her history, it is critical Africa’s youth are taught, coached and equipped on what leadership is and why it is critical to become a leader of distinction.
What is leadership?
Leadership is bringing people into new realms of excellence and challenging them to become distinguished in their chosen field. ~ Onyi Anyado.
From my message of distinction, I had to change the mind-set and understanding on what leadership really is. For a long time, leadership has been perceived as people who own or manage global businesses with multi million pound turnover. This is not correct, In fact, from my school of thought, leaders of distinction can be teachers, teenagers, mothers, students, entrepreneurs as well as global thought leaders.
African Leaders of Distinction are Key to the Continents Future
The first part of my quote states ‘leadership is bringing people’. For me, the art of leadership is serving, serving people with your time, talent and tenacity.
To become a leader of distinction, it is critical you identify, nurture then grow your gifts which are connected to your vision. If you don’t have a vision, I’m about to tell you something that will radically change your life. “Your vision is connected to your gifts, talents and passion”. I say again, “Your vision is connected to your gifts, talents and passion”. Once you understand this true, you can begin to take steps and walk then soar into the realms of leadership.
The great African leaders we follow such as Tony Elumelu and Strive Masiyiwa are constantly serving us with their time, talent and tenacity. Why? They understand leadership is leading by actually serving.
The second part of my quote states, ‘new realms of excellence’. For me, to become a leader of distinction, it is critical you are constantly leading people into the arena called excellence.
Do you know as you read my article, somebody is following you? You might say you only have one person following you on LinkedIn or only 50 people on Twitter but leadership isn’t about numbers, rather, leadership is about impact and leading a person or people into new realms of excellence. The ironic thing is when you lead with excellence, people will naturally follow you. So, are you leading people into new zones of excellence or, into the comfort zone called mediocrity?
The last part of my quote states; ‘and challenging them to become distinguished in their chosen field’. To become an African leader of distinction, your life, thought, creativity, excellence and vision has to always challenge people to aim for distinction. Isn’t it interesting that even after his death, Steve Jobs is still challenging people to become distinguished. You’d be surprised how many mothers, students, entrepreneurs and CEO’s are being constantly challenged by his vision.
So, to become a leader of distinction, you need to constantly serve those who are following you with your time, treasure and tenacity.
leadership isn’t about numbers but rather impact.
To become a leader of distinction, it is critical your life, thought leadership, creativity, excellence and vision are challenging people to receive, believe then achieve the goal of distinction.
Real leadership is not seeking the applause from followers; real leadership is applauding the followers who become leaders. ~ Onyi Anyado
